The Nissan X-Trail is okay, but there are rivals with better handling, comfort, interior space and infotainment systems for similar or less money

If you’re not bothered about the big 7.0in colour touchscreen and navigation system on higher-grade versions, mid-spec Acenta is a good choice. It adds a lot of useful kit including dual-zone climate control, driver’s lumbar adjustment and power-folding door mirrors. You also get panoramic sunroof, but this limits rear head room so do check before you buy.

1.6 dCi

This is the lower-powered diesel choice and is offered with a choice of front or four-wheel drive when paired with the standard six-speed manual gearbox or as front-drive only with the optional CVT automatic transmission. It pulls reasonably well from low revs, but ultimately it’s down on power compared with many rivals and not very refined. The auto gearbox exacerbates this, sending the engine revs flaring when you put your foot down.
