Used Nissan X-Trail 2014-2022 reliability review

The Nissan X-Trail is cheap to buy used and can seat up to seven but it's not great to drive and its reliability is questionable.

What should I look for in a used Nissan X-Trail?

We’d suggest taking a look underneath any X-Trail, because there is the possibility it could have been damaged by some off-road driving, however remote a possibility that might be. Also check the lower edges of the bumpers for scrapes or cracks from any off-road use.

Also, the X-Trail is aimed at families which might mean that the interior has seen some action. It’s all pretty well screwed together, but it is always worth checking for broken interior plastic pieces, stains on the seats and wear on the upholstery.

Is a used Nissan X-Trail reliable?

The X-Trail didn't feature in our latest What Car? Reliability Survey but in the last one it appeared in it ranked 31st out of 32 cars in the large SUV category. A disappointing result.

Nissan as a brand ranked 28th out of 31 manufacturers featured in the survey, with an overall score of 85.9%. It finished above Alfa Romeo and Vauxhall but below nearly all other rivals.

Used Nissan X-Trail Reliability: the owners' view

What Car? readers have also given their verdict on the Nissan X-Trail. Generally, there's a mixed level of reliability, with many owners experiencing trouble-free ownership and others plenty of trouble.

There are, however, reports of minor issues primarily related to the X-Trail's electrical systems and infotainment features, although these do not seem to detract significantly from the overall reliability score.

Dealer service gets mixed reviews from X-Trail owners. Positive comments highlight the helpfulness and efficiency of some dealerships, particularly in addressing and resolving issues under warranty. On the other hand, a portion of readers expressed disappointment with the inconsistency of service quality, mentioning delays in repair times and a lack of clear communication from some dealers.

In summary, while the Nissan X-Trail is deemed reliable by some owners and not by others, the variability in dealer service quality and minor electrical issues are areas noted for potential improvement.
