The 308 has its strengths, including a smart interior and plenty of standard equipment. Sadly, it's outclassed in far too many areas to trouble the class leaders. We reckon the Hybrid 180 in Allure trim makes the most sense.

Go for Allure to add 17in alloys, front and rear parking sensors with a reversing camera, sat-nav and high beam assistance.

The combined output of a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor makes for 178bhp – enough for 0-62mph in 7.6sec, which should be fine for most needs. This is our favourite engine option.
