What should I look for in a used Peugeot 5008 estate?

When buying a Peugeot 5008 with the 1.2-litre petrol engine, it's important to check through the service history to make sure everything is in order, with a fully stamped book. Early cars suffered from issues with the 'wet belt' cambelt, which is a type of timing belt that runs inside the engine and is constantly lubricated by engine oil. As a result, the belt can disintegrate and weaken earlier than expected if the engine is not properly maintained, resulting in damage and potential engine failure. Peugeot recommends a belt change every six years or 62,000 miles, whichever comes first. Cars produced from 2023 onwards come with the third generation of the 1.2-litre petrol engine, which replaced the belt with a chain from factory to rectify the issue.
The 5008 interior is full of nice soft-touch materials, but check that these haven’t been stained by grubby fingers. Check the operation of all the seats, especially the flip-up ones in the boot, and that the second-row seats recline and slide as they should. Look at the electrical equipment, too. It’s a large car and will have been used in tight city-centre car parks, so look out for dents and scuffs to the front wings and rear boot. Also check the alloy wheels for kerb damage.
What are the most common problems with a used Peugeot 5008 estate?
At the time of writing, the 5008 has eight recall notices. If you want to check whether they have been fixed, you can contact your local Peugeot dealer. You will not need to pay for anything involving the recall.
Reason for recall
The positioning of the starter motor supply terminal may not conform to specification. Contact with a neighbouring component could cause a short circuit.
How the manufacturer will repair: On affected vehicles check the position of the terminal and where necessary reposition. Replace damaged components if necessary.

Reason for recall
An engine component may not be to specification which could result in loss of engine performance. This may lead to the engine stalling and potentially causing an engine failure. In very unlikely circumstances the vehicle speed may increase without warning but will stop on its own after a few seconds.
How the manufacturer will repair: On affected vehicles carry out a functional diagnostic check of the engine. If necessary replace the engine.

The fuel tank shield may foul the fuel supply pipes. Over a period of time this may cause a fuel leak.
How the manufacturer will repair: On affected vehicles check condition of fuel pipes and replace where necessary. In addition add extra protection to existing and replacement pipes.

On the affected vehicles the operation of the brake vacuum pump may be affected by material detaching from the timing belt caused by the ageing of the engine oil.
How the manufacturer will repair: To rectify this issue a software update will be downloaded which will improve the vacuum diagnosis (in order to warn earlier about the risk of loss or reduction of braking assistance).

Reason for recall
Vehicles may be affected by premature wearing of the camshaft drive chain leading to abnormal noise or to a breakage of the chain in the worst case.
How the manufacturer will repair: Update the software to improve oil pressure and reduce wear. Check the engine noise and replace the chain if required. If no problem found, change the oil to one with higher viscosity and special anti-wear additives.

Is a used Peugeot 5008 estate reliable?
The 5008 has historically done well in our reliability surveys and this year it finished third out of 12 cars in the seven-seat class in our 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey. It did so in a highly competitive class with a good overall score of 95.0%.

Although the Peugeot 5008's fault rate isn’t too bad, only 38% of glitches were sorted for free. That left 12% of owners with bills of up to £50 and half having to pay £101 to £500. All cars could still be driven, and three-quarters were put right within a day. Problem areas included the bodywork, electrics, and gearbox/clutch.
Peugeot as a car brand ranked a disappointing 21st out of 32 manufacturers featured, albeit with a reasonable overall score of 90.3%. That put the firm above Audi, Mercedes and Volkswagen, but below BMW, Kia and Skoda.
Used Peugeot 5008 reliability: the owners' view
A common theme among the feedback from our annual Reliability Survey was the 5008's impressive reliability, with few reports of significant faults.
However, when issues did arise, the dealer network's response varied significantly. Some readers praised their dealers for quick and efficient service, often fixing problems under warranty and without any hassle. Others, however, reported frustrations with slow service and less-than-satisfactory communication, highlighting inconsistencies within the dealer network.
A few readers mentioned specific problems related to the electronic systems and engine components, but these were relatively isolated incidents. Overall, the Peugeot 5008 appears to be a reliable car, though the quality of dealer service can significantly affect the ownership experience.
