The Porsche Cayman is a joy to drive and, if you go for the GTS version, has a fantastic, sweet-sounding six-cylinder engine to match its superb dynamics. If your budget doesn't stretch to the GTS, don't worry: the Cayman 2.0-litre is a fine alternative that still handles superbly, it just doesn't sound as sweet. The Alpine A110 is a seriously good alternative to the Cayman – it's not as fast around a track but great fun on the road.get the best price

The same glorious-sounding, naturally aspirated, flat-six 4.0-litre engine as the GT4 but detuned to 394bhp, which will get you from 0-62mph in a rapid 4.5sec. But as much as the performance is the engines smoothness and wonderful power delivery, which lets you build speed from low revs in sixth gear, or use all the near-8000rpm rev range for a true sports car experience. The six-speed manual gearbox is also a delight.
