If you’re after an affordable coupé SUV that’s still pretty practical, the Renault Arkana is worth considering. It’s not particularly brisk and the ride is on the firm side, but to make up for that it’s very keenly priced and promises respectable running costs relative to other petrol coupé SUVs. Despite being called a hybrid by Renault, the entry-level TCe 140 only uses its tiny electric motor to assist the 1.3-litre petrol engine to reduce its emissions – it isn’t capable of driving on electricity alone. It’s also slower than rivals like the Cupra Formentor 1.5 TSI 150 and not as flexible in the mid-range, but it’s powerful enough and should offer better fuel economy. It’s our pick of the range because it’s actually quicker than the pricier hybrid E-Tech 145 model, it maximises the Arkana’s cost advantage and it is more practical than the E-Tech, which has a smaller boot. Officially it averages around 50mpg.
