Review

While we can see the appeal of the Captur’s funky looks and affordable starting price, by the time you get an engine with enough power coupled to the right trim, it's not that cheap. And all the engines are relatively weak next to those offered in the better-handling and better-packaged Ford Puma; it doesn't ride anywhere near as well as a Volkswagen T-Roc; plus, if it's space you're after, the Skoda Kamiq is much bigger and has a nicer interior.

S Edition adds front parking sensors, a rear-view camera, a 9.3in infotainment touchscreen, a 7.0in digital instrument cluster, blind spot monitoring, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, interior ambient lighting and wireless phone charging. We wouldn't recommend it though, because it's too expensive.

This 158bhp plug-in hybrid uses a 1.6-litre petrol engine and an electric motor. It can run on electric power alone for up to 30 miles according to official figures and the battery takes around 3hrs to charge from a home wall box. Performance is perfectly adequate, but it can fumble when switching between power sources and you’ll have to wait for the engine to really start pulling when you put your foot down hard.
