What should I look for in a used Renault Megane R.S. hatchback?

Luckily, with the current Mégane RS reported problems are few. This is a sporty car, though, and will have been used hard by enthusiastic drivers, so it’ll be worth making the obvious visual checks to the bodywork and wheels. Also check the exhaust for condition and any signs of blue or black smoke when you start the engine. Look at the condition of the brakes, the tyres and all the electrical equipment within the car as well.

Pay particular attention to the wheels of Trophy-R models that come with the optional carbonfibre set. First off, check that both sets of wheels are present with the car, and make sure all they tyres have a decent amount of tread on them. Also check that the carbonfibre wheels aren't damaged in any way; these cost £12,000 when new and will, therefore, be very expensive to repair or replace.

What are the most common problems with a used Renault Megane R.S. hatchback?

Oil pressure solenoid

There is an issue with the oil pressure solenoid in the engine of some examples made between 1 March 2018 and 31 May 2019. This has the potential to leave the engine starved of oil and lead to failure. You'll need to speak to your Renault dealer to find out if your car is affected, because it will need to be inspected and have a new solenoid fitted.

Is a used Renault Megane R.S. hatchback reliable?

Although the Megane and its RS counterpart were absent from the most recent What Car? Reliability Survey, Renault as a brand finished in 23rd place out of 32 manufacturers – that's higher than Subaru and Cupra, but lower than VW, Seat, Ford, Skoda, Honda and many others.

If you would like to see the full reliability list, head to the What Car? Reliability Survey pages for more information.
