Buyers of mid-sized estates have a wealth of choice, with everything from the Ford Focus Estate through to the premium-badged BMW 3 Series Touring vying for their attention. This fourth-generation Renault Megané Sport Tourer brings a refreshing touch of sophistication and joie de vivre to the class, though, and its stylish looks alone should help it steal sales away from its rivals.
There are four engines available: two petrol units, including the Renaultsport-tweaked turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, and two diesels, driven by either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic gearbox. A ‘hybrid assist’ version will join the range soon, which blends a 1.5-litre diesel with a small electric motor to increase power under acceleration.
But the Megane ST has to be more than just a pretty face if it’s to stand out in this class. Read on over the next few pages to get our in depth impressions and to see how it compares with its rivals, as well as our engine and trim recommendations.
