The Seat Leon Estate is a good all-rounder, with competitive list prices, lots of equipment and decent running costs. But its rivals outclass it in a couple of key area, such as practicality, ride comfort and quietness at speed.

Trim: SE

No Leon Estate is short of standard equipment. Even this entry-level SE model comes with a leather-trimmed steering wheel, air-con, 16in alloy wheels, electrically operated and heated door mirrors, electric windows, cruise control and metallic paint. Infotainment includes an 8.0in touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth and a DAB radio. The driver also gets height and lumbar adjustment as standard.

Engine: 1.5 TSI EVO

If you're always going to be carrying a full boot you may decide on more power, in which case try the 128bhp 1.5-litre engine. It offers plenty pace and drops the 0-62mph sprint down to 9.5sec, but crucially has more guts to pull a fully loaded car than the 1.0 TSI 115. It's a reasonably smooth four-cylinder, too, and we managed an easy 45mpg during a motorway run.
