The Seat Leon Estate is a good all-rounder, with competitive list prices, lots of equipment and decent running costs. But its rivals outclass it in a couple of key area, such as practicality, ride comfort and quietness at speed.

Trim: Xcellence Lux

This adds digital instruments and a safety pack, which includes lane assist, traffic sign recognition, a tiredness monitor for the driver and seat belt reminders for rear seats.

Engine: 1.5 TSI EVO

If you're always going to be carrying a full boot you may decide on more power, in which case try the 128bhp 1.5-litre engine. It offers plenty pace and drops the 0-62mph sprint down to 9.5sec, but crucially has more guts to pull a fully loaded car than the 1.0 TSI 115. It's a reasonably smooth four-cylinder, too, and we managed an easy 45mpg during a motorway run.
