The Seat Leon Estate is a good all-rounder, with competitive list prices, lots of equipment and decent running costs. But its rivals outclass it in a couple of key area, such as practicality, ride comfort and quietness at speed.

Trim: FR

FR is the sporty choice, and also worth considering for upgrades such as LED headlights, interior ambient lighting, passenger lumbar adjustment, power-folding door mirrors, dual-zone climate control, auto lights and wipers, and an automatically dimming rear-view mirror. The firmer sports suspension makes the ride harder, though.

Engine: 1.5 TSI EVO

If you're always going to be carrying a full boot you may decide on more power, in which case try the 128bhp 1.5-litre engine. It offers plenty pace and drops the 0-62mph sprint down to 9.5sec, but crucially has more guts to pull a fully loaded car than the 1.0 TSI 115. It's a reasonably smooth four-cylinder, too, and we managed an easy 45mpg during a motorway run.
