The latest Seat Leon is a fantastic all-rounder. Not only does it handle well, come packed with kit and feature a roomy interior, but it should also prove relatively cheap to run thanks to the frugality promised by its petrol engines – especially the 1.5 TSI 130. Indeed, its blend of talents makes this our favourite family car, while the plug-in version is well worth considering, especially for company car users.

Xcellence Lux includes all the Xcellence kit, then adds larger 18in alloy wheels, wraparound interior lighting, leather seats, a foot-activated electric tailgate, high-beam assist and adaptive cruise control.

This uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor that bumps up the power to an impressive 201bhp, and a 0-62mph time of 7.5 seconds.
