The Seat Leon is a fantastic all-rounder. Not only is it great to drive, well equipped and exceptionally roomy in the back, but it should also prove relatively cheap to run thanks to the frugality promised by its petrol engines – especially the 1.5 TSI 130. Indeed, its blend of talents make it one of the very best family cars.

Xcellence Lux includes all the Xcellence kit, then adds larger 18in alloy wheels, wraparound interior lighting, leather seats and adaptive cruise control. It's very pricey, though.

Endows the Leon with some proper performance. In our tests, it managed to sprint to 60mph from a standstill in just 7.7sec, which isn’t far off what some hot hatchbacks can manage. It’s smoother and quieter than the TSI 130, too, but it quite a lot more expensive.
