The Skoda Citigo is one of the best city cars around; it’s cheaper to buy than a VW Up and just as brilliant to drive, with a ride quality that's far above its budget price. On the right trim, there's plenty of equipment for the everyday city driver, while the cleverly packaged boot space makes it a surprisingly practical option.

This is the only trim offered with the more powerful 74bhp engine, which we’d recommend if you regularly venture onto the motorway. It gets air-conditioning, heated front seats, 15in alloy wheels and rear parking sensors as standard, but we reckon cheaper SE trim makes more sense for the majority of buyers.

The more eager 74bhp 1.0-litre engine is a better choice if you regularly drive on fast A-roads and motorways. However, it pushes the price up a fair bit (partly because it comes only in high-end SE L trim), which takes away some of the Citigo’s bargain appeal. Like the lower-powered ‘60’ version, this engine is available with either a manual or an automatic gearbox.
