The Skoda Fabia is practical, comfy and good value for money, and remains one of the best small cars on sale today. It isn’t as engaging to drive as the Seat Ibiza or as efficient as the Honda Jazz, but it’ll cost you less and still manages to be good in every area. If you’re after a new small car, definitely include the Fabia on your shortlist.

Opting for Colour Edition gets you jazzier looks, including 16in alloy wheels, privacy glass and door mirrors painted the same colour as the roof. You also get an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system, keyless entry and a virtual cockpit digital display behind the steering wheel.

This turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol has 94bhp and can get the Fabia to 60mph in around 10.5sec. Okay, that's hardly going to set the world on fire, but acceleration is perfectly adequate for all types of driving. This is our favourite engine.
