The Skoda Superb Estate is a truly fabulous thing. For a start, it's absolutely massive, so it has the practicality base covered. Yet it's far from a one-trick pony, proving pretty comfy, nicely made, well equipped and great value for money. If you can forego a premium German or Swedish badge, it's a spankingly good estate car.

Range-topping Laurin & Klement adds luxuries such as adaptive suspension (DCC), a rear-view camera, park assist, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, rear climate control, a gesture-controlled powered tailgate, a heated windscreen, electrically operated front seats and perforated leather seat trim.

If diesel is not your thing but you have an eye on efficiency, then the plug-in hybrid 1.4 TSI iV 218 comes highly recommended. This uses an 85kW electric motor paired with a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine for a total power output of 215bhp. It's one of the quicker versions of the Superb (0-62mph takes 7.8sec) and has an official electric-only range of up to 38 miles, which is better than the BMW 330e Touring.
