The Skoda Superb is a truly fabulous thing. For a start, it's absolutely massive, so it has the practicality base covered. Yet it's far from a one-trick pony, proving pretty comfy, nicely made, well equipped and great value for money. If you can forego a premium German or Swedish badge, it's a spankingly good executive car.

The sportiest trim comes with a sports steering wheel, Alcantara seat trim, heated sports front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, 19in alloy wheels, a 9.2in infotainment screen, Wi-Fi and performance monitor (extra readouts for g-force, oil temperature, oil pressure etc in the infotainment system), carbon-effect interior trims and sports suspension.

This petrol engine is our pick of the range. With 148bhp the 1.5 TSI 150 has enough poke to match the 2.0 TDI 150 from 0-62mph (that's 9.1sec for the record). You have to work it harder up hills than the diesel, but it has the requisite oomph if you're not always carrying heavy loads or towing. It's also smooth, reasonably fuel efficient and pretty good on company car tax. Whether you're on a budget or not, it's a great option.
