For the style-conscious, city-bound driver, the Smart brand has been a winner. This Forfour model is the bigger sibling to the diddy Fortwo, and gets similar quirky styling but wrapped up in a more practical four-seat, five-door layout.

It's a rival for the likes of the Renault Twingo, which shares the same chassis and engines, the Hyundai i10 and the Volkswagen Up, but the Forfour is more expensive than all of them.

It has a funky-looking cabin, that’s also roomy and well equipped. Thanks to its small proportions and tight turning circle, it’s fine for zipping around town in, although some rivals are more fun to drive.

Read on over the next few pages to get our in depth impressions on the Smart Forfour, along with our recommendations for which of the trim levels and engines to go for.
