The Subaru Forester covers some of the basics well, with a comfortable ride, generous levels of equipment and four-wheel-drive grip, but it falls short of most rivals. A Mazda CX-5 will offer a similar amount of equipment, but is more practical, quieter on the road and can be had with four-wheel drive too.

The top-spec trim has larger (18in) alloy wheels, sat-nav, leather seats, a sunroof, privacy glass and heated rear seats.
