The Subaru Forester covers some of the basics well, with a comfortable ride, generous levels of equipment and four-wheel-drive grip, but it falls short of most rivals. A Mazda CX-5 will offer a similar amount of equipment, but is more practical, quieter on the road and can be had with four-wheel drive too.
The 148bhp 2.0 petrol engine makes the Forester feel very much like a big car with a small engine, and it's hard work to get up to speed. The official 0-62mph time is 11.8sec.
