Used Toyota Aygo X 2022-present reliability review

The Toyota Aygo X is good to drive, ultra-reliable and should be cheap to run. Only its limited practicality holds it back.

What should I look for in a used Toyota Aygo X?

What are the most common problems with a used Toyota Aygo X?

As with all cars, check for bodywork damage and kerbing on the wheels, and inspect the interior for signs of wear and tear. All new Aygo Xs come with a 10-year/100,000 warranty – you do have to service your car at a franchised dealer each year to maintain that cover – so you'll have whatever is left of this with a used example.

In terms of safety equipment, the Aygo X is generously kitted out. All versions come with automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane-keeping assist, six airbags, traffic sign assist, tyre-pressure monitoring and Isofix child seat mounts in the back.

During safety testing, conducted by Euro NCAP, the Toyota Aygo X was awarded four out of a possible five stars.

  • Typical time off road: none

The Aygo X is quite a rarity among new cars these days - it's a small car with a petrol engine. While many car makers have swapped petrol for electric power for their most petite models, Toyota has stuck with a 1.0-litre petrol engine that makes the Aygo X cheaper to buy than electric alternatives, such as the Fiat 500 Electric, but still means it's pretty affordable to run.

Toyota's tiniest car has outdone all of its bigger siblings with a rock-solid reliability rating of 100%. That means not a single Aygo X owner responding to our survey needed to seek assistance from dealers at all in the previous 24 months.

Owner’s view: “Its superb reliability is the thing I like best about my Aygo X.”

Toyota Aygo X review

Toyota as a brand finished in fifth place out of 31 manufacturers with a good score of 96.1%.

Reliability rating 96.1%

Toyota doesn’t match the near-faultless performance of Lexus, but it does produce some highly robust cars. In fact, some of its smallest, most affordable models are the highest achievers. The Aygo X is one of just two models to gain a full 100% reliability rating this year, and the Yaris looks dependable too, with a rating of 93.5%.

Larger models, such as the Toyota RAV4, which scored 98.8%, are also a sound choice if you’re after a hybrid family SUV.

Used Toyota Aygo X reliability: the owners' view

As part of our annual Reliability Survey, What Car? readers said the 2022-present Toyota Aygo X has delivered excellent reliability so far.

Owners reported no significant faults with their cars, with most describing a completely trouble-free ownership experience. This strong performance is in line with Toyota’s wider reputation for building durable small cars.

When it comes to dealer support, feedback was equally reassuring. Readers praised Toyota dealerships for their courteous service and efficient handling of routine maintenance. There were no mentions of repair delays, recurring faults or unexpected costs, suggesting a smooth and stress-free experience for owners.

Although the sample size is limited, the consistency of positive feedback indicates that both the car and the dealer network are performing very well. For buyers looking for a compact city car that’s unlikely to cause headaches, the Aygo X appears to be a safe and reliable choice.
