The Toyota C-HR's low running costs and good equipment levels partly make up for its relatively high price tag, but its ride, handling and practicality are not as good as the best small SUV rivals'. If you do buy a C-HR, we think the 1.8-litre regular hybrid in Design trim is the best choice.
The trim
Don't rule out entry-level Icon trim because it comes with all of the essentials, including adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, climate control and LED headlights. However, as we mentioned earlier, it has a smaller touchscreen infotainment system than other trims levels and is not available with the plug-in hybrid model. It's worth upgrading to Design.
The engine
The 1.8-litre is our pick. It’s no speed demon, managing 0-62mph in 10.2sec, but it’ll get you up to motorway speeds without too much fuss, plus it keeps the price respectable.
