The Toyota Corolla is a fine family car, with hybrid engines that offer exceptionally low running bills. It isn't perfect – its infotainment system is poor, the Skoda Octavia offers much better rear seat space and the Ford Focus is more fun to drive – but on the plus side, it's very comfortable, it benefits from Toyota's exceptional reliability record and you get loads of standard equipment.get the best price

This range-topping trim is too pricey for us to recommend, even though it adds keyless entry, ambient interior lighting, sports seats, part-leather seats and even bigger (18in) alloys to everything that comes with cheaper Design trim.

The 1.8-litre hybrid has a relatively modest 120bhp, but acceleration (0-62mph in 10.9sec) is adequate in most situations – even when joining motorways. The only time you’ll want for a bit more oomph is when you need to overtake dawdling motorists on country roads.
