The Corolla Commercial is a unique proposition: it’s cheap to run thanks to its hybrid engine, practical, and more comfortable to drive than many of its van-based rivals. And for those reasons, it's the best car-derived van you can buy.

The trim

Design is well worth a look if you like your luxuries. It adds privacy glass, LED fog lights, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 17in alloys, the full 12.3in digital instrument cluster and rain-sensing wipers.

The engine

In many ways, this is the best version of the Corolla, because its 177bhp 2.0-litre hybrid is much punchier than the cheaper 1.8 and responds more eagerly when you squeeze its accelerator pedal. However, it's a pity you end up with a much smaller boot.
