The Toyota Corolla is a fine family car, with hybrid engines that offer exceptionally low running bills. It isn't perfect – its infotainment system is poor, the Skoda Octavia offers much better rear seat space and the Ford Focus is more fun to drive – but on the plus side, it's very comfortable, it benefits from Toyota's exceptional reliability record and you get loads of standard equipment.get the best price
Trim: GR Sport
This sporty trim level gets you more aggressive styling inside and out, including sports seats, red stitching on the steering wheel, 18in black alloys and a head-up display. It doesn't add a sportier driving experience, the ride is a little worse on the bigger wheels, and it's too pricey for us to recommend.
Engine: 2.0 VVT-i Hybrid
In many ways, this is the best version of the Corolla, because its 177bhp 2.0-litre hybrid is much punchier and responds far more eagerly when you squeeze its accelerator pedal. However, it's a pity you end up with a much smaller boot than the 1.8-litre hybrid.
