Review

Fourth-generation Yaris has a frugal hybrid system that’s punchy enough even out of town while the interior is solidly constructed. It’s decent to drive, but rear seat space is average and its boot is a bit on the small side. It’s also pricier than rivals, but it’s worth bearing in mind that there’s no cheap, simple engine in the range and equipment levels are pretty generous. However, the Fiesta is more fun to drive and the Polo still the consummate all-rounder.

This trim gets pretty much every possible Yaris feature thrown at it, but costs far too much to recommend.

A 0-62mph time of 9.7sec won’t set anyone’s trousers on fire, but the Yaris has plenty of punch and doesn’t struggle when getting up to motorway speeds. It’s economical, especially around town, but, with a CVT automatic gearbox as standard, the Yaris is pricier than many rivals with simpler, less powerful engines.
