Although it’s well equipped and has a hybrid engine option, the Toyota Yaris doesn’t excel in enough areas to stand out in the tough small car class

Trim: Icon

The Yaris is well equipped, even in the Icon entry-level trim; as well as Toyota’s Safety Sense package, you also get rain-sensing windscreen wipers and powered front windows. The 7.0in infotainment system with Bluetooth and a six-speaker audio system are also fitted across the range. Hybrid models additionally feature automatic air conditioning and projector headlights.

Engine: 1.5 VVT-i

The pick of the engines. This 1.5-litre petrol version is quicker than the 1.0 from 0-62mph, and is smoother in general. It’s worth going for, despite its higher CO2 output and distinctly average fuel economy figures. It’s available with either a manual or automatic gearbox.
