Review

Attractive company car tax bills and big discounts for private buyers are the two main pulls of the Vauxhall Astra. If you’re looking to inject a little excitement to your daily commute, the Ford Focus is a better bet, but the Astra is still a fair choice if you just want a down-to-earth family hatchback.

Trim: SE

Entry-level SE is worth considering, because you get 16in alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control and a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system. Disappointingly, though, there’s no automatic emergency braking or alarm.

Engine: 1.5 Turbo D

This diesel engine delivers adequate acceleration, although there is a noticeable pause between you squeezing your right foot and the car surging forward – especially from low revs. The optional nine-speed automatic gearbox available with this engine only compounds the problem, although not quite to the point the Astra feels frustratingly sluggish
