Review

Attractive company car tax bills and big discounts for private buyers are the two main pulls of the Vauxhall Astra. If you’re looking to inject a little excitement into your daily commute, the Ford Focus is a better bet, but the Astra is still a fair choice if you just want a down-to-earth family hatchback.

Aimed mainly at company car drivers, Business Edition Nav gives you a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system with built-in sat-nav, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring, DAB radio and Bluetooth. You also get 16in alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control with a limiter, a front armrest and a leather steering wheel. Disappointingly, you don’t get automatic emergency braking or an alarm.

This diesel engine delivers adequate acceleration, although there is a noticeable pause between you squeezing your right foot and the car surging forward – especially from low revs. The optional nine-speed automatic gearbox available with this engine only compounds the problem, although not quite to the point the Astra feels frustratingly sluggish
