Attractive company car tax bills and big discounts for private buyers are the two main pulls of the Vauxhall Astra. If you’re looking to inject a little excitement to your daily commute, the Ford Focus is a better bet, but the Astra is still a fair choice if you just want a down-to-earth family hatchback.

Trim: Elite Nav

Adds heated leather seats (front and rear), a heated steering wheel and climate control, plus you also get a larger 8.0in touschreen infotainment system and digital instrument dials. SRi trim represents better value for money, though.

Engine: 1.5 Turbo D

This diesel engine delivers adequate acceleration, although there is a noticeable pause between you squeezing your right foot and the car surging forward – especially from low revs. The optional nine-speed automatic gearbox available with this engine only compounds the problem, although not quite to the point the Astra feels frustratingly sluggish
