Review

Attractive company car tax bills and big discounts for private buyers are the two main pulls of the Vauxhall Astra. If you’re looking to inject a little excitement to your daily commute, the Ford Focus is a better bet, but the Astra is still a fair choice if you just want a down-to-earth family hatchback.

Trim: SRi

Our favourite trim brings tinted rear windows, LED headlights and the more supportive Sports seats we talked about in the interior section. You also get larger 17in alloy wheels, smart interior trim and automatic emergency braking.

Engine: 1.5 Turbo D

This diesel engine delivers adequate acceleration, although there is a noticeable pause between you squeezing your right foot and the car surging forward – especially from low revs. The optional nine-speed automatic gearbox available with this engine only compounds the problem, although not quite to the point the Astra feels frustratingly sluggish
