Review

Attractive company car tax bills and big discounts for private buyers are the two main pulls of the Vauxhall Astra. If you’re looking to inject a little excitement to your daily commute, the Ford Focus is a better bet, but the Astra is still a fair choice if you just want a down-to-earth family hatchback.

Trim: SRi VX-Line Nav

Based on SRi Nav trim, but add a few sportier styling touches, including 18in bi-colour alloy wheels. Not worth the extra cash, in our opinion.

Engine: 1.5 Turbo D

This diesel engine delivers adequate acceleration, although there is a noticeable pause between you squeezing your right foot and the car surging forward – especially from low revs. The optional nine-speed automatic gearbox available with this engine only compounds the problem, although not quite to the point the Astra feels frustratingly sluggish
