The Vauxhall Grandland X is competitively priced in most trim levels, and is well equipped and spacious enough for most families. However, it's hard to ignore the fractionally cheaper Skoda Karoq, which has a nicer interior, is sharper to drive and has a range of more refined engines. This is the most basically equipped version of the Grandland X, but you still get 18in alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, high beam assist and cruise control. You also get a 7.0in touchscreen with a DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but no sat-nav. Disappointingly, it doesn't come with automatic emergency braking.

This 118bhp diesel can’t match the speed of the 1.2-litre petrol, but its solid mid-range shove pulls the Grandland X ably enough, even when it’s fully loaded. Average fuel economy is second only to the hybrid models and even then, the diesels will be more efficient than a plug-in with a flat battery.
