Review

The Vauxhall Insignia doesn’t excel in any particular area, but stick to the lower trim levels and it’s not a lot of money compared to other executive cars. Avoid the petrol models and it should prove cheap to run, although there’s no tax-busting plug-in hybrid model. Just remember that rivals are better to drive and even more practical.

SE Nav is the entry trim level and is reasonably well equipped. You get 17in alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a 7.0in touchscreen with sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic wipers and automatic LED lights.

The cheapest engine in the range is this 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel. It’s pretty frugal and has competitive CO2 emissions, but its performance and refinement disappoint.
