The Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake is a stylish estate with a pleasant interior and a decent range of engines. The boot is not a whole lot bigger than the Arteon hatchback's, but the increased rear headroom makes it a more practical option. Premium rivals are a bit classier inside and the best estates out there are more practical, but this is still a spacious and comfortable alternative to a dowdy old wagon.get the best price

If you’re fond of life’s little luxuries, Elegance is worth a look. For a reasonable extra fee, you get larger 18in wheels, part leather seats that are heated up front, keyless entry and more advanced driver assistance features.

We’ve not sampled this engine in the Arteon Shooting Brake, but it can feel a little weedy in the Skoda Superb Estate when it’s loaded up to the roof. That suggests to us that one of the punchier engines will be a better fit.
