Review

The Volkswagen Arteon is good to drive, stylish and amazingly practical when considered in the company of other coupés, and even some saloons in the executive car class. It's not as dynamic to drive as a BMW 3 or 4 Series or as beautifully finished inside as an Audi A4 or A5, but it is comfortable, well equipped and relatively affordable to run as a private or company car. Just make sure you get a good deal if you're paying outright because the depreciation is worse than anything with a premium badge.

Even entry-level SE Nav trim comes well-equipped with sat-nav (unsurprisingly) controlled via an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, LED headlights, three-zone climate control, AEB, lane assist, eCall, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, auto lights and wipers, power-folding door mirrors, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and part electric seat adjustment. All the kit you need, in other words.

The 148bhp 1.5 TSI 150 petrol is the obvious engine option. It's the cheapest version to buy and will officially average 45mpg but can power the big Arteon from 0-62mph in 8.9sec, which is plenty quick enough. It makes light work of motorway jaunts or fast, flowing country roads and proves flexible when you don't rev it hard and free-revving when you do. Comes only with a six-speed manual gearbox.
