The VW ID.3 is a remarkably well rounded small electric car. Not only is one one of the few EVs that’s genuinely good fun to drive thanks to its well-weighted steering and fantastic body control, but it feels genuinely nippy too, matching the acceleration of the pricier Kia e-Niro Long Range and pummelling the rest of its key rivals, such as the Citroën e-C4 and Peugeot e-208. It’s also surprisingly well-equipped in base Life trim and benefits from slow predicted depreciation.

Entry-level life trim is so well equipped it’s the one we’d go for. As standard, you benefit from LED headlights, a multifunction steering wheel, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, power-folding door mirrors, front and rear parking sensors and the 10in infotainment system we’ve written about elsewhere in our review.
