The Volkswagen ID.4 is a decent electric car with a practical interior, an excellent safety score and a good range (especially with the 77kWh battery). However, the best rivals are faster, smarter inside, have much better infotainment systems and take less time to charge. The Pro Performance Style is our pick of the range, and we'd avoid the pricey Max and GTX versions.

The GTX may be the sportiest ID.4, but don’t get too excited by its name. It has a bit of extra power, bolder looks and more standard equipment, but there's no real transformation in the way this electric SUV drives.

The range-topping GTX has not one but two electric motors, given it more power and four-wheel drive. Acceleration of this version is roughly on a par with cheaper versions of the EV6 and Mustang Mach-E, so it's nippy enough but don't expect to be thrown back in your seat. 0-62mph officially takes 6.2 seconds.
