The VW Passat GTE is spacious and refined, with an impressive hybrid system that makes the most of the electric battery. However, rivals still have a longer electric range.

Trim: GT

A good option if you want lots of kit, but at this price the Passat Estate is straying into the same territory as some more upmarket (albeit smaller and less well equipped) rivals. It comes with 18in wheels, a digital instrument cluster, leather and Alcantara upholstery and a panoramic sunroof. The most powerful petrol and diesel versions also get adjustable dampers and trapezoid exhaust pipes.

Engine: 1.6 TDI

This engine is smooth and promises good fuel economy, but it has to be worked quite hard if you want decent pace because it’s a fairly low-powered engine in a big car. The optional seven-speed automatic 'box (a six-speed manual is standard) goes some way to concealing the relative shortage of power and actually reduces CO2 emissions, so could well be the better bet.
