Classy, comfortable and refined, the Passat is a genuine rival to the established executive carsread the full model review
A good option if you want lots of kit, but at this price the Passat is straying into the same territory as some more upmarket (albeit smaller and less well equipped) rivals. It comes with 18in wheels, a digital instrument cluster, leather and Alcantara upholstery and a panoramic sunroof. The most powerful petrol and diesel versions also get adjustable dampers and trapezoid exhaust pipes.
This engine is smooth and promises good economy, but it does have to be revved quite hard if you want decent pace. The optional seven-speed automatic gearbox goes some way to concealing the relative shortage of shove (a six-speed manual ’box is standard) and reduces CO2 emissions, so is worth considering.
