Classy, comfortable, refined: the Passat is very recommendable. A big selling point is space and practicality thanks to a practical boot and spacious rear seats, but here it is still pipped by the cheaper Skoda Superb. If you are looking for the ultimate premium executive, though, both the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series offer more, but carry a steeper price tag.

Trim:

S

Entry-level S trim is pretty sparsely equipped. It has air-con, 16in alloy wheels, but does feature an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone mirroring, digital radio and Bluetooth, but it’s well worth spending the extra on the more lavishly equipped SE Business version.

If you prefer petrol power, there's only one choice: a 1.5-litre with 148bhp. In most circumstances it provides all the performance you might need, revving out keenly and feeling sprightly. However, if you find yourself trying to overtake on a steep hill or pulling a car full of people and paraphernalia, then you'll rue not having the extra mid-range slug of a diesel.
