Used Volkswagen Passat 2015-2022 reliability review
The VW Passat is classy, spacious and relaxing to drive. It’s a great used buy, too
What should I look for in a used Volkswagen Passat?
The interior is durable and hard-wearing, but you should check all the electrical systems thoroughly. It’s also worth checking the suspension carefully, especially if you plan to carry or tow heavy loads.
The steering system can also give problems, so make sure all power assistance feels even and consistent, and keep an ear out for any unusual noises. The DSG auto gearbox can also be a cause for concern, but this should be covered under warranty. Volkswagen as a brand scored above average in our most recent customer satisfaction survey and the firm’s products have a good reputation for reliability.
Is a used Volkswagen Passat reliable?
The Passat scored badly in the executive car class in our most recent reliability survey, finishing in 19th place out of 20 cars. Its score was 82.2%. That placed it below the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes C-Class and nearly all its main rivals.
Volkswagen as a brand finished in 18th place out of 31 manufacturers, in the same survey. Its score of 90.5% was an improvement on recent years. The brand finished above Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes, but below BMW, Ford and Skoda.

Used Volkswagen Passat reliability: the owners’ view
According to the 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey, owners shared mixed experiences with the Volkswagen Passat (2015-2024), spanning petrol, diesel and hybrid models.
Many owners praised the car’s dependability during the early years of ownership, but recurring faults were reported as vehicles aged. Common issues included faulty sensors, electrical glitches, and problematic warning lights, with hybrid models frequently mentioned for software-related concerns. Diesel models attracted specific criticism for expensive repairs tied to emissions systems, with some owners describing these faults as recurring and frustrating.
When dealing with dealerships, feedback was varied. Some owners highlighted helpful and efficient service, especially for warranty-covered repairs. However, a significant number encountered delays in obtaining parts and costly out-of-warranty fixes. Hybrid owners were particularly vocal about a lack of expertise at some dealerships, adding to frustration.
Overall, while the Passat has strengths, its reliability and dealer support were inconsistent, especially for older or more complex models.
