It’s no surprise that so many people buy the VW Polo. It leads the class in just about every category – superb interior quality, good space inside and the sort of ride you’d expect from an executive car. If we had to nitpick, it’s a tad on the pricey side.

Trim: S

Air conditioning, electric front windows, an 8.0in colour touchscreen infotainment system and city emergency braking feature on every Polo. We'd pay a bit extra for SE trim, though.

Engine: 1.0 EVO 80

The cheapest engine in the Polo range. However, this engine doesn't benefit from turbocharging, so needs working hard to get the best from it – and even then acceleration is far more pedestrian than in the TSI versions. It's only worth considering if you mostly drive in town.
