Review

It’s no surprise that so many people buy the Volkswagen Polo. It leads the class in lots of areas, offering a great choice of perky engines, good space inside and the sort of ride you’d expect from a good family-sized car. And while it’s pricier to buy outright than some of its rivals, that’s offset to an extent by competitive monthly finance rates and strong resale values.

Trim: SEL

If you love your creature comforts, SEL is the trim level for you. It piles on the equipment with larger 16in alloys, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, traffic sign recognition and integrated sat-nav. It’s just a bit pricey to recommend wholeheartedly.

Engine: 1.0 TSI 115

This engine offers a bit more performance than the 1.0 TSI 95, picking up willingly from low revs and easily coping with motorway journeys. If you do go for this engine, you won't be disappointed, but the extra financial outlay it requires means we'd still recommend the 1.0 TSI 95, which still offers flexible performance. The 1.0 TSI 115 is only available in more expensive trim levels, so you can't get it in our favourite SE trim.
