Review

It’s no surprise that so many people buy the Volkswagen Polo. It leads the class in lots of areas, offering a great choice of perky engines, good space inside and the sort of ride you’d expect from a good family-sized car. And while it’s pricier to buy outright than some of its rivals, that’s offset to an extent by competitive monthly finance rates and strong resale values.

get the best price

The GTI+ carries a fairly hefty premium over the regular GTI, but you get plenty of extra luxuries, including automatic LED headlights, tinted rear windows, rain-sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control and digital instrument dials.

This punchy 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine is exclusive to the hot GTI model. With 197bhp it’s certainly quick: we recorded a 0-60mph of just 6.4 seconds. We just wish it had a little more character, though; its flat tone does very little to encourage you to hold onto gears, unlike the rorty three-cylinder engine in the Fiesta ST.
