Review

Avoid the pricier trims and engines and the Volkswagen T-Roc is a fine buy. Its soft ride is one of the most comfortable in the class, and its spacious interior and big boot will appeal to families. Also, its high-set driving position is just what many SUV buyers crave – and something that many other small SUVs fail to deliver.

Features a driving mode button, 18in alloy wheels, sports seats, in-built navigation system, 10.3in Virtual Cockpit (a digital screen that replaces analogue instruments) and LED headlights. We’d avoid this because it’s too expensive and the larger alloys hurt the ride.

If you fancy a bit more vim and vigour – or maybe you carry lots of passengers and luggage – it's well worth looking at the 148bhp 1.5 TSI 150. This is noticeably quicker than the 1.0-litre, cutting around two seconds off its 0-62mph time, while providing more overtaking opportunities with less stress and fewer gear changes. Also, it brings the option of a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. You cannot have that with the 1.0 TSI 110.
