Review

Stick to the cheaper trims and engines and the Volkswagen T-Roc is a fine buy. Its soft ride, spacious interior and big boot will appeal to families, while its high-set driving position is just what many SUV buyers crave – and something that many other small SUVs fail to deliver.

The long list of standard equipment includes 19in alloy wheels, figure-hugging front sports seats, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and a lane-keeping assistance system. However, we recommend adding the Driver Assistant Pack Plus, which brings additional driver aids.

The T-Roc R is hot hatch fast, blasting from 0-62mph in 4.8sec. Plus, its engine is pleasingly muscular from low in the rev range and develops power in a linear fashion; that is to say, with no nasty spikes or flat spots. It sounds particularly good when combined with the optional Akrapovic sports exhaust, parping theatrically as you build speed.
