The Tiguan Allspace has all the positive traits of the five-seat Tiguan but adds a bigger boot and two extra seats. It’s expensive, though, so we’d stick with the standard Tiguan unless you need seven seats.

Despite being the entry-level trim, Life gives you plenty of equipment. You get 18in alloy wheels, three-zone climate control, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, automatic LED headlights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, electronically folding and heated wing mirrors, digital dials, an 8in touchscreen infotainment system with DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring and built-in sat-nav, adjustable lumbar support and drawers under the front seats.

The entry-level 1.5 TSI 150 petrol engine offers 148bhp and sprints from 0-62mph in 10.3sec. You have to rev it quite hard to get the best out of it, but it’ll easily get up to motorway speeds and offers sufficient performance for pretty much any situation. You can have the 1.5 TSI 150 with either a DSG automatic or a manual gearbox. The automatic changes gears smoothly but can be hesitant when you pull off or need a sudden burst of power.
