Practical for five people, luggage space is plentiful and it's good value in the lower trim levels, but in terms of interior quality and ride comfort the Touareg lags behind its rivals. It also lacks the flexibility of seven seats, all of which pushes us to recommend cars like the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Land Rover Discovery instead for their better all-round packages.get the best price
Trim: Black Edition
On top of R-Line Tech trim, this top-of-the-range version adds 21in alloys wheels, air suspension, Matrix adaptive LED headlights and a panoramic sunroof. It's expensive, though.
Engine: 3.0 V6 TDI 4Motion 231
This 228bhp version is the entry-level unit and is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. Performance is more than adequate (0-62mph comes in 7.5sec), and it'll get up to speed or pull a caravan without much effort. It's generally quiet and should return around 37mpg on a run.
Stylish, refined and a seriously appealing SUV
The Land Rover Discovery is hugely capable and very desirable...
Comfy and well built but hardly exciting
The RX is comfortable and well equipped, but it's not as good...
