Review

The Volkswagen Up offers plenty of choice to appeal to a wide market, including electric and hot-hatch variants. It combines fun driving manners with generous standard equipment, while a high-quality interior sets it apart from rivals such as the Kia Picanto. It’s a shame the entry-level engine is a little underpowered, though, and automatic emergency braking isn’t available.

Trim: Up

The entry-level trim is simply called Up, and is available in both three and five-door guise. It already comes with LED daytime running lights, manual air conditioning, electric front windows and hill-start assistance. It's let down by the lack of a touchscreen infotainment system, though; the Up gives you a small 5.0in colour screen that sits below the climate controls, and displays information such as the radio station and, when fitted, the rear-view camera image. You also get Bluetooth connectivity, AUX in and a USB socket included.

Engine: 1.0

The regular Volkswagen Up is only available with one engine: a 1.0-litre petrol unit with just 59bhp. While it has enough pep for inner-city driving, trying to reach motorway speeds is an outright struggle, and you’d have to wait for a long stretch of country road if you need to overtake a tractor.
